Original oil painting on canvas, 100 x 100mm, 2010
Sofia sees the carved figure in this painting, known as a 'manaia' in Maori culture, as being a wise, highly conscious ancient being, prompting us to live our lives with presence and compassion. Manaia are traditionally seen in Maori carving with a bird's head and a serpent's tail. They are said to be the messengers between the earthly world of mortals and the domain of spirits and Sofia's interpretation of this is that in essence, manaia are angels.
